Comparisons of artworks are important in Art History.  They allow us to draw distinctions between cultures and eras and also to understand the movements of people and see the influences that carried on in their art works.  When comparing two works it is important that they are similar in material and or function. For example, comparing two pieces of ceramics or two buildings would be possible while comparing a piece of ceramics with a building would not.
